Burnout gets talked about as if it were tilt with a longer timescale. It is not. Tilt is loud and you know when it is happening. Burnout is quiet, and by the time a player notices it, they have usually been playing badly for weeks without the sessions feeling unusual.
The players who leave the game rarely point at a single hand. They describe something duller: sitting down without wanting to, playing the minimum, and eventually not sitting down at all.
Five things cause most of it, and each has a fix that is more specific than "take a break".
The game stopped being interesting
Grinding one format at one limit for months is repetitive by design, and repetition is what makes volume possible. It is also what kills the interest that got you playing.
The fix is not usually rest. It is variety inside the same bankroll. Move from cash to tournaments for a week, or from hold'em to PLO at a limit you can afford to learn in. Play some live poker if you have the option, because the pace is different enough to reset something that online volume flattens.
Boredom is also a strategic problem, not only a mood one. A bored player opens too many hands and calls too many rivers, because action is more interesting than folding. If your VPIP has drifted up over a month with no deliberate change, that is worth reading as a symptom.
The month finished red
A losing month is normal, and knowing that does not help much when you are in one. What helps is having decided, before it happened, what a losing month means.
Variance in poker runs longer than most players' intuition allows. A winning player can lose over a stretch that feels far too long to be luck, and the sample where results start meaning something is larger than a month at any normal volume.
Two habits make this survivable. Track results in big blinds per hundred hands rather than money, because money moves with limit changes and hides what is actually happening. And judge sessions on decisions rather than outcomes, which sounds like a slogan until you actually do it and notice how many good sessions you had been filing as bad ones.
Nobody set the schedule
Poker has no shift, no manager and no end of the working day. That freedom is the reason a lot of people play, and it is also what quietly wrecks them.
Without a schedule, sessions expand to fill the day, stop at random points, and get restarted at 2am to make up for a bad run. Sleep goes first, then the quality of decisions, then the results, which produces more late sessions.
Set hours in advance and stop when they end, including on the days you are winning. Add a stop-loss in buy-ins rather than money, and check it between hands rather than mid-hand, because quitting is the first decision that tilt takes away from you.
It stopped being social
Most poker careers are solitary. Players who last usually have somebody to talk to about hands, and the ones who burn out usually do not.
This is not about motivation. It is about feedback. A player alone with their own reasoning gets steadily more confident about spots they are playing wrong, because nothing pushes back. A study group, a coach or one honest regular you send hands to will catch things you cannot catch yourself.
It also changes what a downswing feels like. Losing for a month alone feels like evidence about you. Losing for a month while three other people are losing too feels like variance, which is what it usually is.
The goal was money and only money
Players who set targets in money burn out faster than players who set them in volume or in study, and the reason is structural rather than psychological. You do not control what you earn in a month. You control how many hands you play and how much work you do on the game.
A target you cannot influence turns every downswing into failure. A target you can influence stays hittable in a losing month, which is exactly when you need something to hit.
Rake matters here more than most players admit. At low limits the deal you play on can be a large share of the difference between a break-even year and a winning one, and grinding harder does not fix a bad one. That is worth checking before concluding the problem is you.
What this looks like in our clubs
We have run clubs since 2019, and the players who disappear are usually not the ones who ran worst. They are the ones who played at every hour of the day rather than the hours their game was soft, and who never asked anyone whether the field they sat in was worth playing.
Table selection sounds like a strategy topic. It is also the thing that keeps poker tolerable, because the same win rate is far easier to reach against a good field in four hours than against a bad one in eight. Ask your agent when your format runs well. Most players never do, and they pay for it in hours.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I am burnt out or just running bad?
Running bad hurts and you still want to play. Burnout is the absence of that. If you are opening the client out of obligation, playing the minimum and closing it with relief, the results are a symptom rather than the cause.
How long should a break from poker be?
Long enough that you want to come back, which is usually days rather than weeks. A break that drags on becomes its own problem, because the longer you are away the harder starting again feels.
Does moving down in limits help?
Often, and it is underused. Playing a limit where the money does not matter to you removes the pressure that makes every decision feel heavy, and it lets you rebuild the habit of enjoying sessions before you rebuild the bankroll.
Can changing format fix burnout?
It fixes the boredom kind. Switching from cash to tournaments, or from hold'em to PLO, gives you problems you have not solved yet, and unsolved problems are what made the game interesting to begin with.
Is burnout a sign I should quit poker?
Not on its own. Almost every long-term player has been through it more than once. It becomes a reason to stop when the game is damaging things outside it, and that is a different question from whether you are winning.
Where to start
Pick one of the five that describes your last two months and change only that. Trying to fix all of them at once is its own kind of exhausting.
If the honest answer is that your rake deal has been eating the results, that is fixable and worth a message to @supremaunion. If it is the field, the apps we run clubs in have quite different pools, and moving is easier than grinding through the wrong one.
