One simple tip for choosing an open raise sizing

We are often asked: “What is the best sizing to use for an open raise?”
The answer is simple: the minimum raise (or close to the minimum). In poker, it is important to extract the maximum profit with minimal investment.

At a size of 100+ bb, it makes sense to use sizings from 2.5 bb to 3 bb. But this is true in 10% of cases.
Raising 3bb or more at a size to 50bb is a classic rookie mistake. We run into it all the time.
Open-raise to 3bb creates two problems:

1. Post-flop situations where you need to bluff, the pot will be too big and it will be profitable for your opponent to pay.
2. Preflop opponents won't want to call 3bb with marginal hands - you're just burning your hand's equity.

Don't raise more than necessary. Poker is about cost-benefit ratio. Why raise 5bb to win a 2.5bb pot when you can get the same result with a 2bb open-raise? Think about it!
